Church of Saint-Marcel, Rugny

History

Set some 500 metres apart from the village, on the opposite hillside and surrounded by its cemetery, the church of Saint-Marcel at Rugny reveals several centuries of construction. The oldest traces date to the 13th century, visible in the north chapel and the crossing piers of the choir. The choir with its flat chevet, vaulted on ribbed cross-arches, is attributed to the 16th century; the portal dates from 1689, the porch from 1694. Its greatest treasure is a series of wall paintings depicting the Last Judgement on the triumphal arch: Christ in Majesty flanked by the Virgin and Saint John, with scenes of Paradise and Hell. The church preserves twenty-six classified objects, including polychrome statues from the 16th and 17th centuries (Saints Eloi, Marcel, Nicolas, Barbe, Catherine and Syre), a monstrance, and funerary plaques.
